What Is A Herkimer Diamond?

Herkimer diamonds are six sided quartz crystals that are formed in the Dolostone cavities of the Herkimer County region of New York State. They were first discovered close to the towns of Middleville and Little Falls, and these places also lend their name to quartz mined in this area. You will often hear people refer to these gemstones as Little Falls Diamonds or Middleville Diamonds.

One of the distinguishing features of Herkimer quartz stones is that they are doubly terminated. Other key characteristics are that they are 18 faceted and have six faces. These traits are a consequence of how the diamonds were created. Unlike normal (single terminated) quartz crystals, which are usually formed on one side of a rock, Herkimer diamonds formed very slowly in pockets of clay over millions of years.

Some of the attributes that are desirable in these types of diamond come about due to impurities found within the quartz stones. Stones that have formed with anthraxolite or decayed plant life within them are especially attractive and are rightly in huge demand.

As they develop over such a long period, there are many pleasing features that can form within the diamonds due to processes such as fluid inclusion from water, gas or oil. Crystals that contain water fluids are known in the trade as enhydro diamonds and are extremely pleasing to the eye.

Perhaps one of the most interesting features that can be found within a Herkimer diamond is the phenomenon of a phantom crystal; this occurs when the diamond contains an image of itself within its crystal. Other aspects that are looked for by gemstone enthusiasts include clustered, smoky, bridged and perfect crystals.
